FÖRRA VECKAN… Bekantade vi oss med den s.k. Neo-Aristoteliske metafysikern… …hen frågar inte (i första hand) ’Finns x?’ utan ’Är x fundamental?’ och (om svaret på den frågan är ’Nej’) ’På vad grundas x?’ och ’Hur grundas x i vadhelst det nu grundas i?’, osv. …hen antar därmed att verkligheten är ”hierarkiskt strukturerad” (medges eventuellt inte av alla neo-aristoteliker) Neo-Aristotelikerns (mest?) centrala begrepp är begreppet om grundande: Grundande-relationen förstås oftast som primitiv (= kan inte förstås i mer termer av än mer fundamentala begrepp). Detta innebär dock inte att ingenting informativt kan sägas om grundandets natur… En vanlig uppfattning: Grundande är en asymmetrisk, irreflexiv, transitiv, förklarande, nödvändiggörande, relation.

GRUNDANDETS NATUR… Anta att: osten grundar hålen Då… Asymmetrisk: …grundar inte hålen osten Irreflexiv: …grundar inte vare sig osten eller hålen sin egen existens Transitiv: …om ostmassan grundar osten och osten grundar hålen, så grundar ostmassan hålen Förklarande: om osten grundar hålen, så existerar hålen på grund av osten (på frågan: ”Varför existerar hålen?” är svaret ”På grund av att osten existerar”) Nödvändiggörande: Givet att osten existerar (och är som den är) måste hålen existera (och vara som de är) Samtliga ovanstående egenskaper kritiseras av vissa förerspråkare av grundande-relationen och av neo-aristotelisk metafysik!

GRUNDANDETS NATUR: DISINTERESTED PERMISSIVISM What emerges is that the neo-Aristotelian and Quinean views will differ on at least two points. First, while the Quinean will show great concern with questions such as whether numbers exist, the neo-Aristotelian will answer such questions with a dismissive yes of course. Second, while the neo-Aristotelian will show great concern with questions such as whether numbers are fundamental or derivative, the Quinean will have no concern with this further question. J. VARFÖR VARA SANNINGSGÖRARTEORETIKER? Intuitivt Ger oss ett sätt att ”förankra” (och därmed rättfärdiga) ontologiska slutsatser. Ger oss ett sätt att ”testa” ontologiska påståenden (catch the cheaters). Exempel: teorier om tid Presentism says that the only time that exists is the present (and hence that the only things that exist in time are things that exist at the present time)… The presentist says that there were dinosaurs, but she refuses to admit that there are any past times containing dinosaurs that make it the case that there were dinosaurs … the objection is against accepting truths without accepting the corresponding parts of ontology that would make that truth true; the objection is to having truths without truthmakers. Särskilda relata: …sanningsgörarrelationen råder ”mellan” kategorier (från det i yttervärlden existerande till abstrakta propositioner/påståenden). görs sant av sådant som att katten, mattan, och ligger-på- relationer existerar (och ”sitter ihop”). Katten, mattan, deras relation till varandra, med mera, med mera, kan dock existera i icke- fundamental mening (och alltså vara grundade i något annat, mer fundamentalt).

SANNINGSGÖRANDE OCH QUINEANISM… EXEMPEL: ROSEN ÄR RÖD (parafras) (översättning till 1a ordningens predikatlogik) Quine: vi är ontologiskt ”committed” till existensen av x Sanningsgörarteoretikern: NEJ! Det är vi inte alls! Orsak: Det är möjligt att x inte är en ros, eller att x är en ros, men inte är röd – SÅ – x’s existens NÖDVÄNDIGGÖR inte propositionens sanning! Sanningsgörarteoretikern: Det som nödvändiggör sanningen hos är existensen av en röd ros -Ett sakförhållande? -En trop? -Något annat?

PROBLEM MED NÖDVÄNDIGGÖRANDE… Problem: hotar att ”övergenerera” sanningsgörare (i strid med Ockhams rakkniv) Problem: hotar att ”övergenerera sanningsgörare” (i strid med den intuition som sanningsgörarteorin försöker ge en ”röst”). Exempel: existensen av innehållet i din kyl verkar inte vara ”rätt” sanningsgörare för Lösning (?): RELEVANS FÖRKLARING BEGRÄNSA TEORIN

SANNINGSGÖRARTEORIN: MAXIMALISM (TM MAX ) Nödvändigtvis, är sann OMM det finns åtminstone en entitet  sådan att logiskt implicerar är sann>. Argument 1 mot maximalism: övergenerering (se föregående bild) Möjlig lösning: (TM) gäller inte för nödvändiga sanningar.

ARGUMENT 2 MOT MAXIMALISM: ”LÖGNAREN” (Lögnaren) Om (L) har en sanningsgörare så är (L) sann, och då saknar (L) sanningsgörare Lösning? (L) är inte en meningsfull sats (även om det ytligt sett ser ut att vara det) (orsak: (L) liknar (L 2 : ) i lögnarparadoxen, och vi har skäl att tro att (L 2 ) inte är meningsfull Kritik: (L) och (L 2 ) är inte lika. (L) är inte i sig själv motsägelsefull, den är endast motsägelsefull i kombination med en substantiell metafysisk princip: MAXIMALISMEN Lösning: (TM) gäller inte för satser som (L) Men… finns det fler problematiska satser av relaterat slag, och bör därmed även dessa uteslutas? (möjligt exempel: (A) Problem: Det blir svårt/omöjligt att i princip säga vad som faller under (TM) och vad som inte gör det…

ARGUMENT MOT MAXIMALISM: NEGATIVA & UNIVERSELLA EXISTENSPÅSTÅENDEN Vad gör ovanstående satser sanna (om något)? 1.Nordpolen/Allting (MEN… nordpolen/allting är endast kontingent sådana att de saknar pingviner/icke-fysiska entiteter) 2.Avsaknaden av pingviner/icke-fysiska entiteter (MEN… detta innebär att vi tvingas reifiera ”avsaknader”, något som får betraktas som metafysiskt suspekt)) 3.Totaliteter (jfr. D. M. Armstrong)…

TOTALITETER D. M. Armstrong: ”If the world is a world of states of affairs alone, as I contend, then we have another Tot [totalling] relation holding between the very same whole and the ’property’ being any existent at all.” (2004: 73) The aggregate of states of affairs = reality The totalling property När sakförhållandet att detta aggregat av sakförhållanden är alla sakförhållanden existerar är varje påstående av typen x existerar inte sant (givet att x inte är ett sakförhållande i aggregatet).

YTTERLIGARE (EVENTUELLT) LURIGA TYPER AV SANNINGAR FÖR TM MAX MÖJLIGA: FRAMTIDA: DÅTIDA: KAUSALA: ETISKA: ESTETISKA:

SKÄL FÖR MAXIMALISM (TROTS ALLT…) 1.Intuitivt (Armstrong) 2.Inga godtyckliga undantag (Cameron) What possible reason could one have for thinking of some propositions that they need to be grounded in what there is that doesn’t apply to all propositions? Why should it be okay for negative truths to go ungrounded and not okay for positive truths to go ungrounded? And if negative truths don’t have truthmakers then make no mistake: they are ungrounded. It is no good to say that they are grounded in the lack of a truthmaker for the positive truth that is their negation. Unless we reify this absence of a truthmaker this is nothing but metaphysical smoke and mirrors. It’s totally disingenuous to say that  p is true in virtue of the absence of a truthmaker for p unless there is some thing that is this absence. And if there is such a thing as the absence then it is a truthmaker for  p, so maximalism is vindicated. R. Cameron, 2008:
