PANDA (PAX) Hadronfysik - studier av den starka växelverkan Nästan 100% av den “synliga” materiens massa är oförklarad. Vi kan inte beräkna protonens eller neutronens massa eller t.ex. kraften mellan protoner och neutroner från teori. Den grundläggande teorin för den starka växelverkan, QCD (Quantum Chromo Dynamics). QCD: växelverkan mellan kvarkar och gluoner

Precisa experimentella data behövs för att pröva approximativa beräkningar baserade på QCD Studera enklast tänkbara system som: System av två kvarkar (kvark – antikvark), dvs mesoner System av enbart gluoner, “glueballs” i ett energiområde där approximativa beräkningar är möjliga scale (GeV)  S (scale)  liten störningsräkning t.ex. e + e - →Z 0 Massområde kring 4 GeV/c 2 charmonium c - c kopplingskonstant  S (jfr  QED = 1/137)  stor störningsräkning ej möjlig, protonen potential c - c

HUR? PANDA-experimentet på FAIR Antiprotoner (upp till 15 GeV) annihilerar mot protoner. Hittills oöverträffad luminositet (intensitet) Hittills oöverträffad energiprecision i antiprotonstrålen Detektor (PANDA), stor effektivitet detekterar alla sönderfallsprodukter. Alla kvark-antikvark-tillstånd upp till en massa ca 5 GeV/c 2 kan skapas direkt: p + p → (q q) → … Massa och vidd kan bestämmas med hög precision. Speciellt charm - anticharm: charmonium Förutsagda “glueballs” i detta energiområde har s.k. “exotiska” kvanttal.

Ex: beräkningar lattice-QCD av charmonium och “glueballs” e+e-e+e- Ej tillåtna kvanttal för qq Flera tillstånd X,Y,Z har nyligen upptäckts i detta område, ej kvark-antikvark

UR utvärderingsrapporten: “Nuclear Physics Division The Nuclear Physics Division has a strong central program of hadron physics, focused on the PANDA experiment at FAIR, in collaboration with other Swedish and European groups. This will be the flagship program for this group over the next decade or more. …… In particular, the future of the research and, importantly, the training program in the nuclear industry-related area is strategically important, and an independent national expertise outside the nuclear industry is needed. …… Over the next few years, at least one new position will be needed to strengthen the PANDA effort, and a second is needed if the nuclear- industry related research is to continue. If a new experimental program is started, this will also need support, either from existing posts within the enlarged Department of through recruitment.”
