2 Reality: The Researcher  Has no time  Relatively low understanding of copyright, in general  Did not read the copyright transfer agreement  Has an alternative view on “authors’ last draft”  Fails to see the benefits of (quality) publication registration

3 Conclusion  Researcher-driven parallel publishing will never be high-volume, correctly executed.

4 Parallel Publishing Activities at LiU – Began late 2007 – Authors can do it themselves, but from the beginning LiU library has offered a centralized service – From registration to parallel publishing – When the publisher’s pdf can be used, parallel publishing occurs “automatically” – In other cases, researchers are contacted: instructions to send appropriate file(s) – Library stays on top of copyright, linking, embargo… rules – Centrally handled posts have much higher quality – TALK TO RESEARCHERS!!! – MANY TIMES!!!

5 Parallel Publishing Workflow – Each week: list of the latest publications from Linköping from ISI (~monthly, lists from PubMed and Scopus) – List is parsed automatically: – Sherpa is used to determine the rules for parallel publishing – For Linköping authors, link made to personnel database – Email created and sent to all LiU authors when author input for parallel publishing required – Publication registered in DiVA – When publisher’s pdf can be used, file is obtained from journal; otherwise wait for file(s) from authors – Merge figs, tables and text – Add title page (information auto-extracted from registered info in DiVA and from Sherpa) – Upload file, set embargo

LiU E-Press). Flera studier de senaste åren har visat att parallellpublicering leder till ökad citering av artiklarna (för mer information om parallellpublicering se http://www.ep.liu.se/nl/2007/Parallel_publish_with_LiU_E-Press_sv.pdf) som i ljuset av dagens ranknings- och utvärderingsteknik är av stor betydelse. En av många services vi erbjuder på LiU E-Press är parallellpublicering av artiklar. Om du är intresserad behöver du endast: (1)Via e-post skicka mig den version av artikeln som du skickade till förlaget. Ofta är det ett MS Word-dokument (om figurer och tabeller finns som separata filer, e-posta filerna till mig så lägger jag in dem i artikeln) men LaTeX går också bra (beträffande LaTeX är jag tacksam om ni konverterar filen till pdf, men det är inte absolut nödvändigt). 18 Experience  It takes time for people to “accept” the emails as being more than spam  Best if it is coordinated with publicity  Many will not read the details of the instructions  1 person per uni will object to getting the emails  A number will accuse you of advocating illegal activity

19 Breaking News  We have begun a project to clarify the parallel publishing rules for journals not in Sherpa.  Beginning with a list from DiVA, journal articles registered last 2 years, non-matched against Sherpa  Steingrimur contacting each to determine their rules  Plan to send this database to Sherpa  Stage 2: chapters

20 Conclusions  A reminder email system is relatively simple  The single action that gives the biggest result for parallel publishing
