Your experiences of academia (this far) What similarities and differences did you find in the group? What are the major differences? What are the major similarities? Is it possible to talk about one academic culture?

8 Studying with Business Administration and Economics at LiU
- Some general ideas about our education

9 What is our education all about?
Peter Agnefjäll, prev. CEO of IKEA Studied Business Administration at LiU ”– I found many of the courses fun and useful. But, looking back, I realize that the most important thing was that I learned a certain methodology, a way of turning an issue inside out and investigating it in-depth.” 313 varuhus i 40 länder, anställda

10 Our education Provides you with an understanding of the subjects of business and economics Gives you the skills to use a number of methods and tools including the ”management language” Gives you training in an ”academic attitude” Gives you training in processing large amounts of information Gives you training of your analytical capacity Is relevant both as a main subject and as complement to other education

11 The LiU idea of quality in education – keywords

12 Principles of an ”academic attitude”
Responsibility for ones own learning process and actions Equality and respect for others Teamwork requires mutual responsibility Attending to the principles of plagiarism Read more:

13 Course participation: General principles
The courses are considered equivalent to full-time work (40 hours per week) Focus on one topic at a time Individual work and group work is expected besides scheduled activities Presence is expected for scheduled activities – but mandatory only when explicitly mentioned If you miss out on voluntary learning activities, it is at your own responsibility to compensate If you miss out on mandatory activities – make sure you know what to do instead (read the study guide, inform teacher) In either case: you miss out on learning opportunities and points that cannot be retaken! General rule: don’t miss out!

14 Principles of course design
Alignment between goals and activities and examination Lectures introduces a topic Seminars/workshops serves to discuss or apply theory to practice, often via cases and group work Individual reading and reflecting upon the literature Examination in close relation to what has been discussed Emphasis on several kinds of learning objectives: The knowledge as such (learning, applying etc.) Obtaining/training skills Obtaining/training attitudes

15 Forms of teaching – course work
Lectures Introduction to an issue Combine with reading course literature – before and after Student interaction is appreciated but not demanded Seminars/workshops/lessons Practice what you read Discussions; application of theory Usually demands some kind of preparation individually or in teams Student activity is demanded Individual work and team work in-between lectures

16 The international classroom
In our courses you will work together with students from other countries/universities as well as other (Swedish/LiU) programs ”The international classroom” – interacting in an international environment

17 Teamwork The benefits are many:
Working in teams is a common form of organisation in working life, hence relevant to train for Working in teams means that more can be accomplished than alone Working in teams gives opportunities to learn from others and share what you know Working in teams means that you get to know new people that you can both work and have fun with But the benefits are not accomplished without work!

18 Working in teams Share your expectations and plans
What do I want with this assignment? What are my abilities/prerequisites/expectations? Listen to each other! Discuss prerequisites in relation to the assignment What needs to be done and how should we do it? Design a contract for the process How to deal with deviance from the contract? If you run into problems that you can’t solve yourself, talk to the teacher! Never enter the name of a group member who did not contribute on an assignment when submitting it for assessment!

19 Examination

20 Examination forms – in teams or individual
04/12/2018 Examination forms – in teams or individual Individual written exam Answer specific questions by making use of what you learned in the course Individual oral exam Individual home exam Individual work where you can use course literature to investigate and elaborate answers to questions Project work Team work where you work together to solve a problem or investigate an issue to fulfil an assignment

21 Principles of examination
04/12/2018 Principles of examination For mandatory examination activities, three opportunities are typically offered The department standard for assessment (marking period) is ten working days The grade is communicated via Lisam and/or the Student portal No extra assignments – or alternative examination forms/dates – are offered except those described in the course study guide A pass (grades A-E) means that the exam cannot be taken additional times in order to receive a better grade The course grade (A-F) is set only after all mandatory assignments of the course are completed

22 Principles of examination, continued
A grade set it is not negotiable Grading is an act of public duty (formal authority) If an obvious mistake has been made (such as a miscalculation) a grade can be revised Contact the examiner or Student Expedition (If something is amiss, don’t pick a written exam up!) It is obligatory to sign up in advance for a scheduled written examination: The deadline to sign up is 10 days before the examination date Sign up via the Student portal or via the app LiU-app At LiU, written exams are anonymous (an anonymous identity number replaces the student’s signature on the exam)

23 Find more info on exams (including links) in the Examination guide:

24 Course information

26 Make sure you are up to speed!
Lisam – the course platform for information sharing and more Keep track on a daily basis!

27 Course evaluation Please take the time to help improve our education!
A survey called “Evaliuate” is sent out at the end of each course via the Student portal and you are informed by e- mail Asks for your experiences and serves as a tool for course development Is anonymous Asks how well the course has been carried out in relation to the course syllabus Please take the time to help improve our education!

28 Who does what? Course director: Examiner: Teacher: Administrator:
Organises and manages the course Examiner: Exercises the authority of examination – a public duty Teacher: Involved in teaching activities Administrator: Registers grades, organises roll-calls Study director: Outmost responsible for the courses offered, admission, staffing courses etc.

29 FAQs

30 ”Do I need to buy the course book?”
Always make sure that you are equipped with the mandatory literature for the course – in due time It is generally not sufficient to just attend lectures – in order to pass the exam you must read and understand the literature too!

31 ”Can I go on this trip?” If there are activities outside of the course that you want to attend: There will be no ”special treatment” for students who prioritize other things than course activities Make sure that you know what you will miss out on and if/how you can compensate for that Inform the teacher/course director
