6 Immigration is not a unitary phenomenon. Economic and social integration differs vastly by time, group and country. Successful historic episodes include: – Transatlantic migration to United States 19 th and 20 th century – Russian Jewish migration to Israel in 1990s – High-skill migration to Canada and Australia Less successful historic episodes include: – Post-war French migration from North Africa and colonies – Roma migration to Western Europe – Scandinavian refugee migration from 1980s Contested historic episodes include: – Low-skill Mexican migration to United States – Migration of guestworkers to Germany – Somali migration to Canada George Borjas, Harvard: “The most important lesson of the research is that the economic impact of immigration will vary by time and place, and that immigration can be either beneficial or harmful”.
